You Can’t Pick Something Up Until You Set Something Down

I know it seems really simple and obvious but I never really considered this until a few weeks ago. I was greedily picking up rocks and shells while at the beach and my hand was so full that when I tried picking up a new rock or shell, I would accidentally drop the ones in my hand. Try as I might, it kept happening.

And then it hit me.

When I am picking up something new. I have to set something old down.

This is not rocket science, but it applies to so many things. It hit me like a ton of bricks. You know a veritable AH HA moment. This was not just trying to hold on to the pretty rocks, but all of the things I am trying to, life itself.

How often have I tried to make changes or do something different only to have it all fall apart? I was set on carrying ‘everything’ with me that it did not leave room for the new things that I wanted. Don’t we all do this?

Forward movement is not possible unless we let some things go. I know for myself that is some really scary stuff. Leaving the comfortable old things is unpleasant. Kind of like when you finally realize that you really need to retire your favorite pair of shoes because they are hurting you. It may take a while to notice and understand but once you do it is inevitable.

I will never look at rocks and shells on the beach the same way again. I will certainly be picking them up but I will keep in mind that I may have to set some down.
