Dogs Don’t Know….

Duh.. they don’t know a lot of things, Kristie.

You’re wrong, but that’s not up for discussion. Yesterday was Thanksgiving and in all reality it was just another Thursday for me. I regrettably wish I had thought about it differently but it is over and the milk is spilled.

While I was outside watching the dogs play, enjoying how much fun they were having, I kind of wished I was a dog. Xena was running back and forth between two very dead soccer balls. I was kicking them as best I could and Joeri was running back and forth between us. We had a good time. In fact, it was probably the best part of my day.

It made me think though. Dogs don’t know WHAT day it is. Not only that, but they likely don’t care. I think dogs have a very unique perspective that in some ways makes them better equipped to deal with things. One could argue that they don’t feel disappointment but given enough time observing dogs I would argue that they do have feelings.

Dogs don’t care if the day is a holiday. Dogs care about spending time with their people. They enjoy lying in the sun chewing on their toys and chasing balls. Dogs, well some dogs, are great floor cleaners. They help you eat your giant bowl of popcorn if it is prepared properly. (My dogs insist on the good butter and moderate salt, they won’t eat it otherwise). They like comfy blankets and snuggling on the couch. They want to be with their people no matter the day or time.

If I could skip the holidays I would. I enjoy Christmas, the lights, the food. But mostly I just want to be with my people and I don’t want to have to wait for a special day just to do that.

I want to be like my dogs. They don’t know and they don’t need to.
